I'd seen the movie a few years ago, which confirmed John Malkovich and Gary Sinise as some of my favorite actors. I was already interested in reading it since I've read The Pearl, which must be the only required reading that I really enjoyed reading, and the movie fuelled that interest. This is another classic book that I wasn't forced to read in high school, and likely enjoyed much more in reading it on my own later. Though my modern perspective makes me hate some of the characterization, I acknowledge the work as both a work of genius and a product of (and comment on) its time.

Well, officially I have read this book before in high school and I hated it. But, I had to read with one of my classes again and I found that I actually like it this time!
