This is a situation where I really wish there were half stars. I didn't love this quote enough for four stars, but I definitely would put it higher than three stars. emotionally, I felt a bit distant from this tale of a Harlem preacher and his family. but it is beautifully written and introduced me to a writer I wasn't that familiar with. it's a case where,while I didn't love it, I'm very glad I read it.

This one needs to be read quickly, in just a few sessions, rather than being drawn out over an extended period of time. It makes complete sense that James Baldwin said this semi-autobiographical novel needed to be the very first thing he published, before sending anything else out into the world.
