As usual, another beautiful writing by Haruki Murakami. Still featuring a lonely, sensitive guy who is shocked to know that he was being cut off from his group of friends because of something that he didn't understand.
Years later, Tsukuru Tazaki met a woman who told him to face his mystery, confront the issue directly with his ex-friends. Otherwise, he would not be happy for the rest of his life.

Like all the other Murakamis I have read--dislocating and maybe even mildly distressing to read, yet enjoyably so, if that makes any sense. Both the translation and Murakami's plot itself conspire to remind you about how little you understand about the narrative voice. Themes of lost friendship and lost youth are usually mitigated by some hope for the future; Murakami is pretty uncompromising about not allowing this either.

We often cannot identify our true self. It is nearly impossible to hold up a mirror and determine our own abilities. We end up measuring our worth against others, what they think of us. We want to find a way to appraise ourselves, but this can only be found within. It is our own confidence that will draw others in.

This book was so digestible I started to wonder if it fit more into a teen or young adult category. I enjoyed it and finished it in just a few days. I'm not sure any of it will stick with me, or just in one ear and out the other. Still, it was a good book to read at the beach. I remember Murakami being more challenging than this, but I guess the last time I read him I was in high school/early college!

A beautifully written and told story of a person in his mid-30s acknowledging the parts of his past that scarred him and seem to be holding him back. The pilgrimage allows for piecing together a new reality and sense of self.
Physically, the book is very nicely designed with allusions to the story embedded in the design choices/placement. Neat!

Murakami is always good, but I like him best when he's a little more weird than this.
