YA feminist fantasy about fighting and taking down the patriarchy? Sure! This was a good, fast read, though more brutal (and at the same time removed from that brutality) than I thought it would be. I had a pretty good idea of where it was going, especially after Deka's blood ran gold and she was named a demon, but it was a pretty fun ride getting there. I was looking for a light and entertaining book by an African author, but I just cannot with this book.

It ticks all my buttons:
* first person present tense
* that repetitive style so popular in YA where choppy phrases are lumped together for drama
* a plot that makes no sense
* wayyyyyy too much talk about "purity" in young women

Their village is best by terrifying paranormal creatures that are hard to kill (the "deathshrieks") and there are some among them who are demon slayers with special power ...more
