You know what goes well with cleaning the house and making lunch for the kids between their distance learning lessons? AUDIO BOOKS! Today I listened to the memoir In the Dream House. 4.5 I haven’t underlined a book so much in a long time starting with the very first line about the “violence of the archive” and “archival silence”.....Machado writes “sometimes a story is destroyed, and sometimes it is never uttered in the first place; either way something very large is irrevocably missing from our collective histories....What is placed in or left out of the archive is a political act, dictated by the archivist and the political context in which she lives.”

This book was magnificent. I don't remember ever reading a memoir that was laid out in this way, and so well researched that you didn't even notice it was researched. It was brave and beautiful, haunting and horrifying. I know it's only January 20th, but this is already in the running for the best book of the year. Read it.
