An interesting story with good pacing. It does a great job of incorporating Native culture into the narrative. Content warning: rape, murder, drugs. All of that mixed with a sometimes YA-ish sensibility.

I started off listening to the audiobook, because someone recommended that it was helpful to hear the Nish language elements, and I did appreciate that. But then when I had 2 hours left, I switched to the hardcover version, because I was too impatient to listen to the end (the one drawback of listening to this book -- I have no idea how to spell anything).

Ugh. So good. I avoided this initially because I’d mistakenly assumed it was some sort of high fantasy (a genre I’ve sadly lost the patience for lately). It is very much set in this world (albeit in 2004, a detail I kept getting surprised by for some reason). It’s about an Ojibwe girl named Daunis, a star hockey player with a family full of tragedy.
