I had such high hopes for this book. The story is an important one and that’s the reason I rounded up 3.5, the details are poorly executed.

“When someone dies, everything about them becomes past tense. Except for the grief. Grief stays in the present. It’s even worse when you’re angry at the person. Not just for dying. But for how.”

There is so much to love about this multi-layered #ownvoices story. I mean--just look at that cover, for starters. Here we go: Daunis-the strong, curious, clever main character, the nuanced and fully realized supporting cast, the mystery, the hockey, the UP setting, the complicated and authentic relationships, the faith, the wisdom received from the elders and the respect given to elders. The rich Ojibwe culture is a centerpiece to this story and so much more. NOT a book to "teach" me, but a con

Book Riot Read Harder: Genre novel by an Indigenous, First Nations, or Native American author
This started off as your run-of-the-mill "girl likes guy" story, but then switches gears about 50 pages in, blam! Action, suspense,...I guess 2021 is the year of the thriller for me, as this is the 3rd one I've read this year. And this is categorized as YA, but I didn't think of it as a YA book overall. I loved this book. Super complex, didn't shy away from any hard subject, kept me guessing the whole time. I'd give it five stars if it was 100 pages shorter. I don't know how to cut 100 pages without loosing big chunks of what makes it great, though.
