Klara is an artificial friend (AF) to a sickly girl. Klara understands the essential loneliness of the humans around her and does all in her power to ameliorate the barriers that divide the humans from one another. Her empathy is greater than the other AF’s and, dare I say, than the humans around her.

3.5 stars This was my second Ishiguro book and it can be summed up, again, as "not a gripping book and it took me a second to finish, but it gave me a lot to think about." Pacing remains an issue for me; the first ~200 pages were a bit trying until a Thing was finally revealed in the last third of the novel — this seems to be the author's writing style. I have enjoyed other books by the author (Remains of The Day, and Never Let Me Go) but this story was so flat and slow and nothing much happens. There have been other books and movies about AI (AF in this book for Artificial Friend) and no original ideas or interesting angles are examined. Disappointing!
