Just finished this beast. All 945 pages of it. I'm trying hard not to overstate my love for this book since I just finished it and I suppose its possible that some of the shine could rub off of this in the coming months. Two former Texas Rangers, Woodrow Call and Augustus McRae, move a large herd of cattle from Texas to Montana. This is a western novel of epic proportions. I loved every minute of it...I dreamed about the characters and missed them terribly when I finished the book. Fortunately, McMurtry wrote some more about them!

One of my Dad's all-time favourites.
I'm so glad I read this epic story. At 945 pages it is long but when I got to the end it wasn't long enough - I wanted to know What Happened Next. (I read plot summaries for the rest of the series online.)
Great writing, great characters, and a great story that really stays with you. (Though quite a downer, not a lot of good stuff happens to anyone, ever!)
Looking forward to watching the mini-series. ...more
