The Shining is one of those books that pretty much everyone else had read but that I had never read. Well, now I have finally read it!

I saw the film version with Jack Nicholson forever ago so I knew the basic story going in but the book was better than the film and kept me captivated throughout.

This book was not what I was expecting. I've only recently started reading King, so his writing is new to me. I was surprised to not find this book particularly frightening. I might be because I'm reading it for the first time later in life (I can imagine it scaring me more were I a younger reader), or because I've seen the movie so many times (and that imagery has stuck with me), or because I'm so into true crime that this doesn't make a blip on my psyche. It took some time to erase the image of Jack Nicholson from my mind as I read The Shining...but once I did, I realized how sad the story really is. Jack Torrance was a tortured soul from the get-go and Danny only 5 but shouldering the burden of "the shine". Once again, I heart Stephen King :) ...more
