The Shining is one of those books that pretty much everyone else had read but that I had never read. Well, now I have finally read it!
I saw the film version with Jack Nicholson forever ago so I knew the basic story going in but the book was better than the film and kept me captivated throughout.

This book was not what I was expecting. I've only recently started reading King, so his writing is new to me. I was surprised to not find this book particularly frightening. I might be because I'm reading it for the first time later in life (I can imagine it scaring me more were I a younger reader), or because I've seen the movie so many times (and that imagery has stuck with me), or because I'm so into true crime that this doesn't make a blip on my psyche. Classic King -- can't believe I hadn't actually read it yet. It's fairly different from the movie, and better in certain ways. Eager to read the next book now.

It took some time to erase the image of Jack Nicholson from my mind as I read The Shining...but once I did, I realized how sad the story really is. Jack Torrance was a tortured soul from the get-go and Danny only 5 but shouldering the burden of "the shine". Once again, I heart Stephen King :)
