I was born the same year as the protagonist, Amir. As I read the story I couldn't help but think...where was I at this time, what I was I doing? I certainly wasn't hiding in an empty fuel truck or nursing a parent with cancer. My life has been so easy by comparison. I did once, in high school, have an encounter with Afghanistan. I enjoyed learning about modern Afghanistan through the eyes of a child. The only thing about the book that didn't sit well with me was actually part of the plot and resolved at the end of the book, which was lovely.
