This was appropriately spooky for middle grades, but pretty weird and not altogether resolved. It's a bit like Unfortunate Events with its oddball orphan who goes to live with oddball extended relatives in an oddball house.

The title intrigued me, and apparently the story is pretty good. This is fantasy before Harry Potter, very simple and unpretentious, enjoyable with decent storyline. I quite like Uncle Jonathan and Miss Zimmerman, and Lewis as the unlikely hero is also nice. There's nothing very remarkable in the book - bad witch, mysterious clock, end of the world plan, and magic - but I think the charm is because this book brings back memories of your childhood. Not bad.
