I opted for this version of the book for a couple of reasons: I wanted to put it in my classroom, and Stamped from the Beginning was out of stock on Bookshop. I definitely want to read the...first edition? original edition? grownup edition? but I’m glad I started here. This book does an amazing job of explaining something so complex in a way that’s easily accessible (I mean, yeah, racism itself isn’t all that complex I suppose, but the systems that prop it up definitely are).

I want to read the longer version of this as well but this was a good starting point. It's great on audio too - Jason Reynolds (the author) is an excellent narrator.

This was my second attempt at reading this. The first time, I could not get the rest of the family to like or pay attention to it. So I just started all over (it had been way too long between readings anyway).
I get that this is a middle grade or high school book, but I could not get on board with the over-the-top jokiness of the tone. And I also get that Reynolds was trying to distill down Kendi's big, historical book into something that kids (maybe) would read, but there were just so many insta ...more
