Shortly after we moved to Atlanta at the end of 2015, we visited the Center for Civil and Human Rights. Part of one of the exhibits is an interactive area that focuses on non-violent protest. You sit at a bar-height table, put on a headset, put your hands in a designated spot on the tabletop, and close your eyes. Beautifully drawn, and a poignant memoir of Congressman John Lewis. If you have any knowledge of black history, there will be no surprises here. However, there is beauty, and a terrible parallel with racial violence today. I will be buying part two on Monday!

A great, readable, engaging glimpse into the early life of Representative John Lewis and how he rose to become instrumental in the Civil Rights movement. I never knew a lot about Rep. Lewis before, and I'm sorry I missed out. His story is powerful. I can't wait for the other two volumes to come in at the library already. The art is wonderful, the writing and pacing is great--the slow development is well worth it to see how his youth shaped his convictions. And his love of chickens.

In the "serious graphic novel category," March will certainly join the ranks of Maus and Persepolis.
