A powerful message delivered engagingly--even winsomely via combination of Eggers' text and Harris's illustrations which are rendered in construction paper and India ink. I love the illustrations.

This was a really great book - the facts were interesting (I learned new things!), and the illustrations were really cool. I LOVED the message.
Pretty much the only thing I didn't love was the tone - I liked the bits of humor, but other times it felt a bit repetitive and condescending. But don't let that stop you from reading it! ...more

Not really a poem, not really an informational book, not really narrative nonfiction. Not really sure if my students will connect with this one. Beautiful illustrations, an enduring message and a few interesting nuggets of information. A nice "further reading" section is included.

The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus is one of my favorite poems so you know I loved this book. It's a little too much in the style of "talking down" to kids, in my opinion—and that is the only reason I don't give it 5 stars—but there is humor and the amount of information is very well balanced. Overall, really great!
