“The day Somebody McSomebody put a gun to my breast and called me a cat and threatened to shoot me was the same day the milkman died,” begins Anna Burns’ Milkman, the winner of the Man Booker Prize in 2018. Taking place during The Troubles in 1970s Northern Ireland, it is a stream-of-conscious novel about a young unnamed character troubled by the title character’s harassment in the midst of a dangerous society that honors the collective opinion full of nasty gossip more than the individual.

This is going to be a longer review than normal. I try to avoid books that feature violence against animals, especially pets. There is an extended sequence of this book that features violence against pets. When I got to that point, I stopped reading, disgusted. I told myself I didn't have time to read this kind of stuff that would make me so upset. I wasn't that into it anyway, so I'd just return it to the library.

This book is an astounding reading experience. It took many pages to fully immerse myself into the narrator’s unique voice, but once I did I was hooked. There’s a tension between danger and innocence that the novel basks in and never lets up. Reading this is a rewarding challenge to the system.
