I adored this book. It's a simple, fast read, and it just packs in so many things that I love. The main character, Elma, is a physicist and a pilot. In 1952! She is married to a brilliant engineer. This is where we deviate from an already exciting reality. Suddenly, a meteorite strikes the Eastern seaboard. In the very first pages, a meteor hits 1950s East Coast United States. Scientists expect that there will be a major climate shift on top of the immediate catastrophe, and one logical solution is to try to get to Mars to build a colony and save humanity. I loved this book and could not put it down. An alternate history where the space program of the 50s and 60s was accelerated and woman pilots strove to be astronauts.
