A MUCH shorter version of this ran initially on Book Riot. I’m just now getting around to posting my full review here. BR post: http://bookriot.com/2017/02/01/riot-r...
When I first saw this book at the bookstore, I picked it up because I thought the cover looked vaguely medieval. I thought maybe it was a historical fiction that I might want to read. Then I saw that it was a memoir and dropped it like a hot rock. Personal memoirs have never really been my bag, although I’ve read a few of them. I’ ...more

Absolutely loved learning about falconry and the goshawk, and the memoir stuff about grief, wildness, and forging/imagining human and animal connections was really great. I get why she brought TH White's story into the book but I hated that miserable dude in all the pages about him.

This was interesting, and well-written. The focus is very much on the hawk, and her grief flickers in and out of focus, sometimes fading away, other times unmistakeable. You don't have to know anything about hawks or falconry - Macdonald explains things as it's useful to know them, or as they come up. A wonderful read.

Audio book read by author. She was awesome. The book was fascinating. Sometime I would daydream away from the story during detailed sections about falconry, but overall it was captivating (if a little depressing). Liked how it was told in alongside the story of T H White and his life and attempt at having a goshawk.
