I so wanted to love this book as it deals with nature. Alas, there was too much dwelling on the life and problems of a deceased homosexual schoolmaster and his aborted attempts to train a goshawk.
MacDonald has her own problems with grief over her father's death but her tale, while perhaps rough, is bearable to read. I quite liked her when she was flying Mabel.

The writing in this book had a meditative feel of both focus and reflection. The way the author responded to the loss of her father fueled the book, but wasn't weighed down by it. I was left feeling uplifted.
