Messy, complicated characters with messy, complicated lives = yes, please. My biggest issue with the book is that I wasn't always clear on who was who in the text messages. But, man, this is really a book about FEELINGS, so. Messy and complicated.

Also, and it must be said, but I am so in love with that cover. Everything about it is perfect.

A fast read that looks at all the complexities of young adulthood and falling in and out of love.

Written in two voices (but mostly Penny's), this is the story of a serious college freshman who falls for her roommate's (sort of) uncle, a 21-year-old who works at the coffee shop nearby. I read about 1/3 of the way thru and then skimmed the rest. Too long and while the set-up was interesting there was too much backstory and personal drama to hold my interest. Lovely cover.

I didn't really get into the book until 25% of the way in, and then I was hooked. Sweet, quirky and fun YA romance that had interesting secondary characters - Celeste and Jude were just as interesting as Penny and Sam. I thought the story-within-the-story plotline from the writing class (and its abrupt conclusion) was unnecessary and distracting, but otherwise, super enjoyable. ...more

A satisfying novel that will be right at home on a shelf with my Rainbow Rowell novels.

4.5 stars for me. I really kind of loved this book in the way I love Rainbow Rowell. I’m deducting a half star because of a couple of subplots that seemed left unfinished. Very good otherwise.
