Wow, I ended up liking this book a LOT.
I didn't like the flowery prose at first -- god, it seemed like she used a simile every other sentence. I don't know if she toned them down once the narrative wasn't directly about the mother, or if I just got used to it, but after a while, I was hooked.
I also want to be a foster parent. Because apparently all foster parents are horrible.
California is as much a character in this book as Astrid or Ingrid, and I always appreciate great senses of place.
