As part of my Read Harder challenge I was to select a book about books and the lucky winner was The Uncommon Reader and I can say it was an uncommon book!

She chooses a book and starts reading. The week after the library is there again, Norman too. She get another book and eventually become a reader with the help of Norman hi

*** An amusing novella about what happens when the Queen of England discovers the pleasure of reading. It starts innocently with an inadvertent visit to the mobile library parked outside. [I would have given the book five stars but was really bothered by a particularly crude turn of phrase that just didn't fit the character or the book.:] ...more

This book has a bookmobile library and the King of England singing a song from "Oklahoma!" in the first few pages, and it all goes uphill from there. A delightful little story about what would have happened if the Queen had taken up reading, with a fantastic ending. Loved it. ...more

I don't really like Alan Bennett but this was a quick, charming homage to the pleasures and wonders of reading. I wouldn't have wanted it to be any longer, though. ...more
