A really good true crime book, but even more importantly, a really good nonfiction link to the early Victorian mystery genre. Both Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens modeled detectives on Jack Whicher and Mary Ann Braddon's "Lady Audley's Secret" is just one of the "sensation" novels based on this case.

Especially good for people leading discussions on early detective fiction!

The Disappointing Mr. Whicher...or is it the Wandering Ms. Summerscale? No, I've got it! The Bloated Book of Everything Victorian!

I was looking forward to reading, what I thought was, a true crime book with a bit of a look into Mr. Whicher's professional life too. Very interesting book about a high-profile murder and its influence on the development of the English mystery and detective genre. A bit meander, though.
