My 12-14 year old self would have loved this novel. My adult self was just not captured by it. Which was disappointing because I know a lot of readers have been! It's fantasy set in a West-African inspired universe and it's great that there is starting to be greater representation like this across all genres. This was my first time reading African inspired fantasy so there were some unique interesting elements going on. There were also several YA tropes present that made things feel predictable ...more

I keep waiting for a fantasy series that I can get into. This book is objectively very good and absolutely deserves all the praise it got. The work is richly rendered and the characters are compelling. And yet, it just didn't land for me.

I'm intrigued enough to read the second book in the series but will probably get it from the library rather than buy it. ...more
