Well, this book ticked all of my boxes for a fast-paced, light-hearted, entertaining adventure. There's a Library existing outside of time and space, collecting rare books from the many alternate worlds in order to balance the energies between chaos and order enough for humanity to survive in each world. Librarians for this shadowy organization are spies, detectives, time travelers, and quasi-magicians, facing down assorted mechanical, steampunk, supernatural, and/or magical beings (as well as y

Perfect sci-fi/fantasy/steampunk vacation read. I can’t wait to delve into the rest of the series.

I really enjoyed this book - there were points where I felt confused by the complex rules of the worlds it's set in, but I think that's because I was reading too fast because I wanted to know what would happen next. I wasn't as into the romance angle, it felt contrived, but it was really a very side bit and hopefully will be fleshed out better in future books. I got this in a surprise book box with the theme "books about books," which seemed promising. I probably wouldn't have picked it off the shelf myself, but it was a fun read. It reminded me of Jasper Fforde, plus a certain steampunk aesthetic. Entertaining, but it's not like I'm going to read the whole series.
