Happy to find the first two installments of this new-to-me mystery series at the library. I love a troubled main character, and Sam Wyndham fits the bill. The post WWI India setting is really well-done. I enjoyed reading that Mukherjee set the books then/there because it was a period he was interested in exploring more.

This book is set in 1919 India where the British rule but the Indian people are becoming more insistent about independence. Wyndham is a flawed detective (like so many others, particularly those who served in WWI) his problem being post-war injury opium addiction. The tension between the British and the Indians forms a good deal of the plot and it’s interesting to note that some of the revolutionaries are turning toward nonviolence.
