3.5, rounded up to 4. I would’ve given this book a solid four stars, but about 2/3 of the way through I found myself thinking that the book needed some editing; it was starting to feel like it was spinning its wheels a little bit. That said, overall I really enjoyed this book. If you expect books to take you to a time and place completely removed from your regular life, you might enjoy this one.

What a delightful new series! Historical fiction with a bit of mystery and intrigue and a smart, strong female lead. I enjoyed learning about India and the 1920's setting. Look forward to reading #2 next year. ...more

The years that India was under British rule has long been an interesting time period to me, and this book is set right smack in the middle of it. Perveen Mistry is someone unusual -- a female lawyer in early 1920s Bombay. She's not considered a full lawyer because she cannot appear in court, but she's able to do a lot of contract work and support her father, who is also a lawyer.
