This was so slow, I had a hard time staying engaged. A murder mystery set in 1920s Bombay, with a female attorney, is a great hook, but the murder takes a long time to happen (and that makes me feel bloodthirsty, that I was looking for the murder - it's not that I wanted murder specifically, I just wanted SOMETHING to happen), and the frequent flashbacks to Perveen's past were tedious and annoying and made this feel like a fluffy romance instead of a murder mystery. Sweeping yet charming, heart-stopping yet also funny, so wonderful to read a book set in 1920's India, tons of diamond-like precise details, brilliant plotting, I could go on!

I just loved this book. Everything I want in a mystery (and I genuinely didn't know who did it until the end), but with an interesting cultural element that didn't take me out of the story, it enriched and enhanced it. I didn't realize this was going to be a series when I finished the book and I am SO glad it is. Preveen is a character I would gladly read more about.
