I've had this book on my shelf for a few years but was honestly a little afraid of its intensity. I have never read a book that so beautifully and viscerally captures the "after" of trauma, the way that survival is an ongoing act that is just beginning when you physically get away from the trauma.

Reading this story was brutal but I couldn't decide between 4 and 5 stars. The story line is devastating and horrific. But, I couldn't put it down. Love, betrayal, survival, resilience, rage...I'm not sure which emotion was the strongest or most important. My heart is just shattered after this book. This is NOT for the faint of heart.

More brutal than I expected, but very compelling and immediate. Mirielle is Haitian-American, kidnapped from her family in Port Au Prince. I think it is the second half of the book that really shines but it is all a very compelling read making real the danger of being a woman in the world.
Utterly harrowing. Know what you’re getting into before picking this up. It does not look away for one second.
If I could give this book six stars, I would. Gay provides a nuanced and complex look at how one woman survives every woman's greatest fear. Not to be missed.
