Set in & around Boston before the Revolutionary War. Octavian grows up with his mother and a society of philosophers and scientists. He's raised as a prince with access to splendid clothing, food, and education. Eventually he learns that it is all a lie - he and his mother are slaves, kept in this house as part of an experiment to determine whether Africans are inferior to Europeans. I'm not sure where I heard about this book or what made me request it from the library, but once I have a book in my hands, I don't read the back or the flap because it tends to give away too much of the story. I unashamedly skipped most of that part and skimmed to the end. I set out ready to really love this book, and I did enjoy the first 150 pages, but then it
