I liked this book, but I am probably giving it a more generous rating than I otherwise would because my experience reading it was compromised by factors that have nothing to do with the book itself. See, I borrowed the audiobook from my library using Overdrive and, unfortunately, delayed in starting it. Once I began listening, I really liked it (I actually recommend the audiobook over the print, because you get a better sense of Haddish's voice). However, three quarters of the way through, the l ...more

Funny, smart, sad. SO funny, SO smart, and SO sad. Definitely recommended if you like celebrity memoirs that are actually real and not just self-aggrandizing, but the genre just isn't my jam. Roxane Gay's review pretty much says what I'd say:

"This is definitely worth reading. Haddish is incredibly funny, smart and observant. She has lived a hard life which makes her success all the more admirable and deserved. There are places where I wanted more depth. The book is short and reads fast, sometime

I really do adore Tiffany Haddish - and her life story is definitely interesting. I really wanted to enjoy this book more than I did, but I’ll be honest - I had a hard time with so much rough language. If you Love Tiffany’s stand up and her acting work, I think this is worth the time to read.

3.5 stars. This book was raw and funny. For me personally, it was hard to laugh at some of the more upsetting stories because I just felt so sad and angry about the mental, physical, and emotional abuse Haddish experienced. Haddish no doubt would not want my pity and would tell me to get over myself. ;-) It’s a very funny audiobook but not anything to be listened to anywhere near the children or if you dislike cursing.

I listened to this on audiobook format, read by the author, and it was not particularly funny. Good start, rambling middle and alright finish with some mixed messages. Okay if you’re curious about Tiffany Haddish but don’t go expecting big realizations and wisdom, just medium fun.
