I had forgotten - or perhaps I never realized - that these were short stories, so I was unpleasantly surprised when I started reading, and BOOM the story ended and a completely new story started.
The first few stories are very same same: an adolescent girl butts heads with her mother or does not have a mother, she bucks societies rules, and something happens as a result. This collection of short stories is really varied, with some including magical realism, others science fiction/apocalyptic futures, and one being so relatable to my own childhood experience, though set in Nigeria. She also delves into many conglomerations of familial relationships, and dabbles in same-sex romantic relationships so not all are straight (so refreshing!).
