For light-skinned African-American women, passing as white was not as easy as it might seem. In the 1920s and 1930s (when this book was set) it pretty much meant giving up your former friends and all of your family so that your new white friends (or spouses) would not find out your true origin story. And even if you were perfect at that, you could not be sure that a predominant gene from your famiy of origin didn't suddenly show up when you gave birth to a "too dark skinned" child. An excellent

I feel like this book would pair well with The Great Gatsby -- they were both written in the 20s, they both have characters of affluence and leisure who have dark secrets, and something horrible happens at the end.

All I have to say is "Wow." This book is little but powerful and explores the lives of women and race. It is a book of great depth while also not saying that much. I'm appreciative for the podcast Recommended and Dhonielle Clayton for telling me about it.
