Thank you to Sara and Chelsey on the Novel Pairings Podcast (episode 16) for putting this book - and Nella Larsen, a new-to-me author - on my radar (and my sister's). They suggested that this book would make a great replacement for The Great Gatsby in the canon, and I'm all in for that. Interesting how it pushes racial boundaries but not class boundaries at all! It's like they could only do one or the other in the 1920s. Everyone is clad in velvet ballgowns and a servant is described as a creature.

All I have to say is "Wow." This book is little but powerful and explores the lives of women and race. It is a book of great depth while also not saying that much. I'm appreciative for the podcast Recommended and Dhonielle Clayton for telling me about it.

Such a beautiful novella. It's like the Great Gatsby of Harlem.
Now...the audio. Tessa Thompson has a beautiful voice, but she isn't a great audiobook performer. Her voice kept going through weird changes, sometimes mid-sentence. I am looking forward to seeing her in the film though. ...more
