This book was a feat. It reminded me of when I read Roots in the eighth grade. It tells the story of a black family in chronological order by character. It also had the same compelling quality of Roots, a page-turning, can't-put-it-down quality. I stayed up all night reading this book, which is something I haven't done since I was young enough to have the luxury to do so. I put this book aside for a month after I started it as I felt I was not "ready" to read it. Whatever that means.
I'm glad I waited to read it with undivided attention. Normally I have a couple of books on the go, but I'm happy I let this one have my undivided attention.
The dual family trees were so intriguing and compelling.
The style of writing is uncompromising. The stories are confronting. Yet hopeful.
