This book took me forever to read. It's beautifully written and I enjoyed each chapter, but what made it frustrating and slow for me is that it's really a collection of vignettes, not a novel. Each chapter - and there are fourteen of them - tells the story about a different person, moving forward through generations. 4.5 stars. Epic and dizzying in its reach. Beautiful. This story of humanity - difficult to read at times - will be unforgettable.

Read very slowly at night over a year. Sweeping and epic, yes, but without the bite of "The Underground Railroad."
