I really wanted to love this book (who doesn't love a book with some controversy behind it?), but I can't even force myself to finish it. The plot is engaging - a direct decedent of the Armenian Holocaust journeys to Istanbul to learn about her past - but the characters are unbelievable and hollow. Time moves at a mysteriously fast clip, dumping the characters into disjointed settings, and the sheer number of characters only clogs the flow of the story.

I read this book in 2012, and just re-read it, in a manner of speaking, on audiobook, read by Laural Merlington. Merlington has a lovely voice that does great justice to Şafak's beautiful words. However, sometimes it was distracting when she mispronounced words and names. I wish she had asked people who spoke Turkish and Armenian, rather than just making a guess.
The book itself is wonderful, and I would highly recommend it. ...more

The characters are really lively and memorable, but the plot and language are kinda meh. I saw the big twist in the plot coming from 50 pages away. Definitely interested in reading more of Shafak's work, but I didn't love this one.

I read about 94 pages, and while it was okay, I didn't find myself caring if I found out how it all unfolded. Decided to apply the nancy pearl rule of stopping if not enjoying after 50 pages.
