An excellent read with a slow start

This book was gorgeous. The characters were compelling and fully drawn, such that I felt that I knew them all. The setting was so realistic that I literally felt cold while I read this book. I didn't want it to end, but when it did end, there was such beautiful payoff that entirely closed the door on this book while leaving the windows open for what is to come.

The only problem was, I almost didn't get there because the first 100 or so pages were so much slower

Read Harder 2017: Debut Novel

Such a good book! Vasilisa is the youngest and strangest child in her Russian family. They live in the cold north, on the edge of the wilderness. Vasya can see things others can't see and this ends up both causing problems and serving her well.

I did like this, but I wished I liked it more. The Russian folklore was super interesting, and I loved the magical characters. I loved this book about Russia (I’m not sure when, but far in the past). There are household sprites, monsters in the forest, and most an untamable girl who can see into magic and tanto horses. I loved her story and this book gets pretty action packed towards the end.

I liked this book, but found it... well, I’m not sure that I will remember it. The best part is the introduction to a different mythology and culture. But a lot of the characterization was forced and obvious.
