This was what we expect of a John Green book: interesting characters who are maybe a little too maturely introspective, a journey, people dealing with their pain. I laughed, I cried, I sighed. The reader gets a painful look into the spiraling thoughts of OCD and anxiety in a way that evokes both sympathy for our main character and sympathy for the people who love her and are frustrated by her. I really liked this. As the mother of a child who has anxiety, a lot of the stuff Aza said sounded very familiar. I will also say that I got a real sense of Aza's OCD and just how trapped by her thoughts she was. That was very well done. I also appreciated that this was a lot less precious than some of John Green's more recent novels and that the love interest was actually a pretty down to earth kid.

This book is mostly Frankenstein-ed together out of other, better books, a fact it generally acknowledges, and yet: 1) John Green remains wonderfully humane documentarian of teenage mental distress and 2) it is apparently impossible to stop reading one of his books once you have started it.

As a moderately anxious person, this book spoke to me and I felt very seen - I've never read such an accurate depiction of anxiety before. It was refreshing to read a John Green book that didn't follow his usual formula and didn't feature a manic pixie dream girl. The mystery was unnecessary as a storytelling device, but I enjoyed being on Aza's journey with her. ...more
