This book was good but it took me almost a year to read. Sigh. It also reinforced my opinion that I'm not the biggest Washington fan. Don't get me wrong, I have a HUGE amount of respect for what he did for our country. Just the fact that he died a few, scant years after leaving office proves how much he sacrificed to build our American government. I just think that we wouldn't have been the greatest of friends. I don't agree with some of his personal choices and he always wanted to play Big Man ...more

Chernow consistently delivers biographies that are thorough, nuanced and bring the subject to life. I have read several biographies on Washington. Chernow's is the longest I've read, giving plenty of time and attention to every phase of his life. The reader is given a chance to see the personal growth of the man, while still recognizing the consistency of his character.
