Can I give this six stars? I am blown away and crushed under the weight of this novel at the same time. I initially resisted reading this book, as it had received so much acclaim. I am ever wary of hype. I also had read one of Colson Whitehead's previous books, Sag Harbor, which I enjoyed, but was light and fluffy and didn't make me think he could do the subject of slavery justice. I here and now eat my hat. This is his magnum opus. I stand in awe of his growth as a writer. This book is about Co ...more

Closed out Black History Month by finishing this one. Five stars is deceptive - do not read this if you don't want to have some unspeakably violent images seared into your mind. You will remember some of the scenes Whitehead so graphically depicts for the rest of your life, regardless of how hard you may try to get rid of them. Unlike most of my audio reads, I had to take this one slowly, in small pieces. It is, unsurprisingly, a hard read (any book about /set in chattel slavery should be a hard read, and if it isn't hard it's probably not an honest depiction). But it is a powerful, vivid, beautifully crafted word that should be read and taken in. And if you are a white reader, I do recommend taking it slow so you can notice your own reactions and defensiveness and desire to turn away. We cannot turn away. This history ...more

I'm not exaggerating when I say that this should be required reading for every American. An extraordinary retelling of African-American history through one woman's experience in / of slavery. ...more

I didn't go into this expecting it to be a pleasant ride, but I still wasn't quite prepared for the casual cruelty of the real and imagined world it portrays. I think this will be a strong contender in the TOB. ...more
