What Members Thought

In an interview, Whitehead said that he was more interested in writing about truth and less interested in writing facts. In doing so, he has written an important book about both slavery and current race relations that is readable, interesting, and compelling. I don't know why I waited so long to read this.

Beautifully written, the concept of the Underground Railroad as an actual railroad was compelling and fit perfectly with the story. It was a rough book to get through. It wasn't easy reading, but I really loved how through the Underground Railroad we were able to see a picture of slavery in so many different states. Our history as a country is chilling and this novel doesn't sugar coat it or tread lightly.

I thoroughly enjoyed Whitehead’s writing style but did not enjoy this novel as much as I expected to. The Underground Railroad itself was more of an afterthought than the title would imply but I appreciated the character development. The concept of the UR being a literal Railroad was very interesting to me and I wish it had been explored more.

Here's my Oprah pick for the Read Harder challenge.
