This is well-written, meticulously researched, and heart-wrenching. Standing alone, it's a pretty good book. The challenge is that it stands among books like Beloved, which casts a long shadow. Though I'm sure this is more historically accurate and explores a wider breadth of experience for people ensnared in the net of slavery, Beloved makes you *feel* the experience in ways this doesn't. this book starts out by grabbing you by the throat and it doesn't let you go. it's heartbreaking and horrific and the hopeful parts of it do nothing to erase the horror of what people went through.
