What Members Thought
A lot has been written about this book...pro and con. Here's my take on it:
I was intimidated by the setting, thinking that it wouldn't be something I would want to read about. I was also put off by the horrible events in the beginning of the book.
However, I found that I loved the themes of friendship and love and sin and repentance and restitution and forgiveness. The story touched something in me and I think it's a fine novel...one of the best I have ever read.

Powerful, well-written, poignant, thought-provoking. This book was hauntingly beautiful. A story of redemption and friendship; but also a moving look into a culture and people that we know so little about, but make so many judgements against. I loved this book....
When I got halfway, I was pretty sure I had finished the original audio book...obviously I wasn't listening very closely.

I found the writing style awkward and hokey, and the scenes of child rape were gratuitous and disturbing. This book came to me highly recommended, and perhaps I dislike it because it didn't meet my expectations.

I enjoyed this book but found it to be slightly overrated, perhaps my expectations were too high. Nevertheless, it's a sensitive portrayal of some controversial topics.
