Okay. Where should I start? Honestly I expected more on this book. I love Special Topics (Marisha Pessl) and so many people recommended this book when they know about my feeling toward Pessl's book. But turned out, it's too much lagging for my taste - big language and too serious convos, even though there are several great jokes and witty characters inside (I love Francis the most, he's so comical). There are no mystery - only some puzzling philosophical and psychological stuff, with lots and lo ...more

This has been a cult classic since it was written in 1992, and let’s just say…I’m not part of the cult. I can appreciate Tartt’s writing and the atmosphere she created, which made me excited about my upcoming trip to Vermont. There were sections that had me eagerly turning pages to find out what happened, but those were interspersed with sections in which nothing was happening and it felt like a slog. The characters were unlikable and (unlike what other reviewers shared) I didn’t really care wha ...more

Great summer read. College kids at an East Coast liberal arts school, secrets, gossip, murder. Loved it cover to cover.

I always struggle when there are no characters that I care for in a story. Particularly when it is quite long. Every character in this story is problematic with varying grades of questionable morality. That said, there was an interesting premise and the part 1 and 2 structure was used effectively.

Why did I wait so long to read this? By all accounts, this is a perfect novel. It’s dark and suspenseful and superbly written. The characters are aggressively unlikeable and unredeemable, but this is one of those books that is all the better for it. Tartt is a master.
