I do know not every character needs to be likable, and heaven knows my university days were filled with poor decisions, yet I found this story to be filled with characters I really wanted to shake and tell them to wake up.

Read Harder - more than 500 pages.
4 stars even though the ending was not the one I wanted (since it was neither happy nor redemptive), but still I thought it was a terrific novel. I noticed a few similarities between Richard and Theo (the main character from The Goldfinch - which btw, I didn't enjoy nearly as much as this one) - drugs, lack of direction. I think Richard made more out of his life, but certainly neither of them figured out how to be happy. I was also very impressed with Tartt's re ...more

This should have been 200 pages shorter! Beyond that, Tartt’s writing is beautiful and this book should have been right up my alley, but I struggled to get into it or to care about any of the characters.
