What an exceptional novel. The first time I read it some 7 years ago, I gave it 4 stars. This time 5. I savored every line. It's written so beautifully with such vivid rich descriptions. Also such a timely novel given the current political climate. So many read the classic dystopian novels 1984 and Brave New World (as I just did again this past month), but this book is written IMHO so much better and considers gender as a central focus. This is the second Atwood book I've read. And I once again enjoyed and was a bit frightened by her ability to make her society so real. Fertile women have been forced into sexual servitude for the benefit of the country, after a strict training on piety. Apparently, from the scene where there are tourists, there isn't a world-wide fertility issue. This is one of those books that I know I should have liked more than I did. It was totally improbable and boring.
ETA: Reread this in 2017 and it was a totally different experience. Loved it!
