I give 3.5 stars for this book and another 0.5 stars for its idea.
I mean - this book is chilling and all, and many said it's still relevant to this day (I agree). But one thing I don't really like is the way this books is written - there are so many vague plots and loopholes that I found unsatisfactory. It's not as if the plot is mysterious, it's just very unclear. Why the situation happened, how it happened, and all the explanations that I wished Atwood would give just a bit more, just to make ...more

It's embarrassing that I've gotten this far in life without having read this book. In fact, the only Atwood I read previous to this was Alias Grace. (And that was for a college English class. One of only two books in that class that I read to completion, if I recall correctly. The other was "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." My friend said it best when she said, "Reading The Handmaid's Tale gives me the same feelings as when I read The Hunger Games but turned up to 11." This book is anxiety-inducing and scarily relevant currently. I highly recommend it, if you can handle it.

Devastating, terrifying and gripping. Atwood is amazing at ratcheting up the tension. I hated the story, as I was supposed to, and was miserable reading it. But I'm glad I read it. I'm sure I'll be thinking about it for ages.

Atwood's writing is superb, but this book depressed me.
