This book was chilling and compelling.
The strangeness of the story yet with so much reference to a possible future. The fact it was written almost 40 years ago does not diminish its impact in anyway. I think it is even more forceful for that.
The narrative style would not suit everyone. Yet I felt the stark structure leant itself to this story.

I was a little frightened of reading this book. I’m not a big fan of dystopian fiction, and I was afraid it was going to be too over-the-top, too unbelievable. But I was pleasantly surprised... While this isn’t particularly a happy story, it was an interesting one. Offred’s world seems unreal to me, but not unbelievable. And I especially liked the open-ended conclusion. Maybe Offred got away? Maybe society has reverted somewhat back to the "norm"? We don’t know for sure, but there’s enough there

I wanted to re-read this book that made such an impression on me in college that I called it a favorite and now has the Hulu series. It is as good as I remember, though recent articles I have read had opened my eyes to race and culture issues that are ignore. I have an old version of the book, but the new one has a introduction by Atwood explaining that she didn't include anything that wasn't done to women in some part of history, and provided context for her examples. It did give me distrubing
