I’ve been wanting to read more classics, and lately, I’ve needed books to help me escape to a completely different time and place. (I'm writing this in 2018. You understand, no?) I thought it might be a slog to read a 500+ page book written in 1847. I had no idea this is a total page-turner about at 19th century feminist. Jane Eyre is a badass and my new literary hero!

I get it now. All the praise. All the fuss. I get why Jane Eyre appears to be the classic of all classics for many. I went into my first ever reading of this book with low-to-moderate expectations. I don't particularly care for the Victorian era and it's sensibilities (particularly regarding romance), though I most certainly love all things England, so that was at least something.

Yay, I finished! There is so much more to this story than any of the adaptations I've seen includes. I really love Brontë's writing, that lush, dense style. How funny that Jean Rhys, with her insistence on economy and single-syllable words, would have tackled the wife's story (Wide Sargasso Sea, one of my favorite books) - but maybe that contrast is the perfect reason.
